A complete contrast to the much larger Competa, Salares is a very is a small and quiet village with only 2 bars that serve snacks and no restaurants. It is very picturesque and is only 10 minutes drive from the Finca (or a wonderful 5 hour round trip walk through the Parque Natural). It is definitely worth a visit, the daytime being the best time due to its lack of amenities.

It is closed to traffic in the centre and so it feels like it is stuck in the past and has not changed for centuries. Like Canillas people still keep chickens and mules in the ground floor of their houses.

There is a Roman bridge to one side of the village amid orange and lemon groves alive the sound of birdsong (this where you would arrive if you walked from the Finca).

Along with Archez, Salares has one of the best examples of a Moorish minaret in the Axarquia at the Church of Santa Ana. Push your way through a pair of old wooden swing doors and you find yourself in an attractive courtyard surrounded by the old walls and arches of the original Moorish mosque. Look up and you see the minaret said to be similar to that of the principle mosque built in Tunis in 1353.

Festivals: July: Feria, September: Arab Festival. December: Navidad
